Given our extensive portfolio and network of operators, we can offer a variety of accommodation choices throughout Zambia. Our database covers all the major cities and tourist destinations in the country, but does not limit itself to a certain market sector. Whether you’re looking for something small, intimate & ethnic, or you need to house a large group, or prefer the budget, self catering option, we will do our best to find what you’re looking for.

There are generally five categories of accommodation offered in Zambia. These are:

  • Luxurious, up-market establishments

  • Comfortable, middle market establishments

  • Simple, budget establishments

  • Self catering establishments

  • Camping

In order to help you establish which type of accommodation would suit you best during your visit to Zambia, we have tried to give an indication of what level of comfort and facilities are usually available at the various ‘levels’. Please bear in mind that the descriptions below are generalisations and we cannot guarantee that everything described will be as such in the particular establishment you may choose to book.

UPMARKET

As can be expected, the luxurious, upmarket lodges and camps offer a very high standard of comfort and service. Chalets or rooms are often fairly large in size and furnished with various extra luxuries or thoughtful attentions, such as special soaps, shampoos, creams etc in the bathrooms, mosquito repellents, bathrobes & slippers, writing pads, minibars or coffee and tea facilities. Services such as internet connections or other business facilities are usually also available if requested. Some establishments even offer spa & beauty treatments such as facials, body massages and scrubs!

It is usually safe to assume that the rates at these establishments are inclusive of most costs such as activities, park entry fees, transfers/shuttles, meals and in some places even drinks.

 MID-MARKET

Although just as comfortable and efficient, most mid-market establishments choose to offer less facilities and luxuries in order to be able to keep the costs for the visitor affordable. Most mid-market establishments have standard chalets or rooms with the essential requirements and little extra frill! Standard of service within these establishments are still of significant level and the expertise of guides and hosts high.

Rates at these establishments can vary as many tend to offer a variety of ‘packages’ you can choose from. Some include everything such as meals, activities and transfers. Packages simply covering bed and breakfast are then also available. Even dinner, bed and breakfast arrangements can be made.

BUDGET

Budget establishments, like in all countries can vary in reliability! Generally speaking though, the more renowned establishments offer clean and simple accommodation. Some rooms have en-suite bathrooms but some have shared ablution blocks. Some rooms even have air-conditioning systems or fans.

Rates at budget guesthouses or backpackers lodges are usually rooms rates only, but some do include breakfast. Establishments usually have cash bars and restaurants serving simple, cheap meals.

SELF CATERING

Zambia has a number of superbly located, conveniently built self catering camps. Often relatively small, these camps are popular with large families or groups traveling together. Booking these camps as a group often  allows the group to have the camp to themselves. Most self catering camps are foreseen of kitchen equipment including crockery and cutlery, and some even have kitchen staff to help with the preparing of meals and laying/clearing of tables and washing of dishes. Most camps also have linen and towels available in the rooms so that guests literally only  have to bring in their own food and drinks.

It is advisable to double check which facilities are available at the particular camp you are interested in as some are very basic and guests are even required to bring in more than just their food, such as their own candles, ice and paraffin for lamps.

Prices per person at self catering camps usually range between USD 60 and USD 25 depending on the standard of, and facilities available at the camp.

CAMPING

Campsites throughout Zambia vary in size, location & facilities. Most however have the basics such as basic kitchen facilities (barbeque spots, washing up basins etc), and ablution blocks.

Some lodges also offer an accommodation choice which falls in between chalet/room and camping. Usually referred to as ‘safari tents’, these are basic tents but without en-suite bathrooms. So for those travellers who do not want to, or can’t carry their own camping equipment, but do not mind ‘roughing’ it a little, and sharing ablution block, these safari tents are ideal solutions for keeping budgets down.

SAFARI HOUSES

Recently, we have seen an interesting type of accommodation introduced into the industry - the so called Safari Houses! These are fabulous, large, villa type accommodations which house a good sized family or group of friends under one roof. The villas are fully equipped and offer a genuine bush experience with all the luxuries of a lodge run establishment with private chefs and guides. These safaris houses are booked as separate entities in themselves - activities and meals are therefore not shared or incorporated in with other guests. Staying at one of the safari houses is a unique, intimate experience in the bush!
